James William Gernerd (5)
March 16, 1849 - February 25, 1896

Son of Elizabeth Gross and William Gernert (4), William married Catharine Miller of Alburtis, PA, on July 30, 1871. Seven children were born of this marriage:

1. Ernest William (6), born October 30, 1872;
2. Carrie Elsie (6), born April 3, 1875;
3. Gertrude Grace (6), born March 28, 1878;
4. Irvin James (6), born July 14, 1880;
5. Alma Victoria (6), born October 15, 1883;
6. Harry Martin (6), born January 26, 1889, died August 1, 1891; and
7. Millie Florence (6), born June 2, 1891.

“He was for many years Sunday School Superintendent, and Principal of the Alburtis public schools. His favorite pastime was the study of natural history, was a skilled taxidermist, and had made a very fine collection of stuffed birds and small animals, birds’ eggs and nests, minerals, etc. Died a Lutheran, but I remember his saying that too much account was still being made of some things in his church, not essential in religion” (from Heinrich Gernhardt and His Descendants, pg. 196).
