Lafayette and Anna Moaria Keller Fetterman

Lafayette Fetterman, PVT CO E 6 PA INFANTRY, Civil War, Apr 7 1839 - Sep 26 1918

Lafayette was the oldest son and one of eleven children born to Elizabeth Snyder and Charles Fetterman of Roaring Creek, Columbia County, PA.

Lafayette enlisted as a private in the Union Army on April 22, 1861, for the American Civil War, Company E, 6th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered out on July 27, 1861, done at Harrisburg, PA. His allegiance was with the Union. Lafayette applied for and received a Civil War Pension as an invalid on February 29, 1892. His discharge papers as well as other sources of his regimental history can be accessed by clicking here.

Shortly after coming home from the war, he married Anna Moaria, daughter of Catherine and Samuel Keller of Roaring Creek Township, PA, on December 26, 1861, in Numidia, PA. Anna Moaria was also an older sister of Mary Elizabeth Keller Fetterman, and they were married to brothers. Early in their marriage, they resided in Roaring Creek, but by 1870 were settled in their home in Centralia, PA. Lafayette secured a deed for his property in Centralia on April 19, 1866, from the Locust Mountain Coal & Iron Company. The deed was recorded on December 3, 1866.

They were the parents of Allen Elsworth, Hannah Bessie, Catherine Ann, William Clinton, and Charles Oscar Fetterman.

After his death, Anna applied for a pension as his widow on October 19, 1918, Certificate #862,156. Lafayette died without a Will, and a Letter of Administration was granted to his son Allen Ellsworth as Administrator of his estate on October 26, 1918.

On a more personal note, the headstone reads that Anna Moaria was born in 1839, but every record I have seen indicates that she was three years older than Lafayette. I located her in the 1850 Census for Roaring Creek, Montour County, PA, and that image shows her to be 16 years of age at the time the census was taken. Their daughter Hannah Bessie was born March 8, 1866, and died on August 29, 1868, age two years, five months, and 21 days, but we did not find a headstone for her. Their daughter Katie and son Charles Oscar are buried close to them. Allen Elsworth is buried in Aristes.
