Selden was the oldest child born to Lucetta Sarah Eisenhart and Benjamin German Gernert. He married Ellen C. Butz on March 22, 1892, and they had two children: Naomi E. and Wilmer L. They made their home in Allentown, PA, where Selden was a machinist. “When last heard of was in the employ of the Bethlehem Steel Co., running a 72-inch lathe and working on 12-inch guns for the government. This work requires an expert, as the steel is worked to the one-thousandth part of an inch” (from Heinrich Gernhardt and His Descendants, 1904, pg. 199).

In 1910, Selden and Ellen were living in Allentown on Fifth Street with their children. At this time, they were married for 18 years, and Selden was working in the steel works as a machinist. They owned their home. In 1920, they were still living in Allentown, and Selden was still working as a machinist in a steel works company. Their children were now 24 and 22 and still living at home.

This branch of the family descends from Anna Rosina Fetterman and Heinrich Gernhardt.
