Shirley was one of three daughters born to Violet O. Hershman and Spurgeon W. Fetterman; she was born in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, PA. She married George Harry, son of Margaret E. Welliver and John H. Deitterick of Madison Township, Columbia County, PA, on September 4, 1954. This was a second marriage for George. Of his first marriage, three sons were born.

They made their home in Hemlock Township where they raised four children. Shirley was employed by Hanover Brands Foods for twenty-two years. She was a member of the Ladies Independent Order of Reindeer No. 65 for more than twenty years and a past president. In his early life, George worked for Magee Carpet Company for nine years and then for the Glen L. Martin Company in Maryland for thirty-seven years. His last position was with Hanover Brands Foods, and he retired in 1971 after nine years of service.

Of the Lutheran faith, they were both members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbia Hill, Montour County, PA.
