Dorothy was the youngest daughter of six children born to Caroline Billig and Leander Fetterman. She was born in Roaring Creek Township, Columbia County, PA. Prior to her marriage, Dorothy had one son, Charles P. Fetterman, born about 1906. According to the records of the Columbia County Historical and Genealogical Society, Dorothy married Kimber Tyson of Numidia on October 9, 1909. The marriage was announced in the Catawissa News Item October 14, 1909.

In 1910, they were living in the Village of Numidia where they were renting a home and Kimber was working as an apprentice to a blacksmith. In 1920, they were living with their son Charley and daughter Blanche in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County, where they were renting a home and Kimber was working as a blacksmith in a shop. As of the 1930 census, they were living back in Locust Township, Columbia County, with their daughter. Kimber had bought a farm there and taken up farming.
