Nellie K. Kurtz and A. Delroy Fetterman

Alfred Delroy was the only child born to Susan A. Kirkendall and Henry Haines Fetterman, born in Berwick Borough, Columbia County, PA. He was a graduate of the Colgate Academy and attended Amherst College. In 1914, he married Nellie, the daughter of Fannie Sult and Jennings U. Kurtz. Nellie was also born and raised in Berwick Borough.

Early in their marriage, they lived in Wilkes-Barre Township with Delroy’s widowed mother and first-born son and daughter. At that time, they were renting a home and Delroy was earning a living as a salesman of headstones. In 1930, they were living on West Front Street in Berwick Borough where they had bought a home. By this time, they had completed their family of six children with two more sons and two more daughters.

After leaving the monument/mausoleum business, Delroy worked for the American Car and Foundry Company for another twenty years and retired in 1953.

They were members of the First Baptist Churck in Berwick where they both taught Sunday School classes. Delroy was also a member of the Board of Deacons for the church and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Berwick and of the Library board. At one time, Nellie had been a teacher at the Unity Mission in Berwick.

At the time of Delroy’s death, they were married forty-nine years. Nellie continued to live in their home until her death in 1972. She was survived by her six children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
