Alvaretta M. Fetterman and Harold V. "Hige" Kissinger

Alvaretta was born in Berwick Borough, Columbia County, PA, the youngest daughter of five children born to Leah May Manning and David F. Fetterman. She was married in August 1929 to Harold V. “Hige” Kissinger, son of Flora Miller and Elmer Kissinger. Hige was also born in Berwick Borough. Of their marriage, two sons were born.

Hige retired in 1962 from American Car & Foundry Industries, Inc. when they closed their doors. He had worked there as a finisher and retired with 44 years of service. Afterwards he worked several years as a painter, and at one time had been a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. When young, Alvaretta had worked for the Regal Shirt Factory in Catawissa for many years. She had also worked for the Lady Esther Corporation for several years. She retired in 1973 from Wise Potato Chip Company where she had worked in the cafeteria. She also served as secretary/treasurer for many years for the Roselawn Cemetery until her retirement in 1993.

Methodist in faith, they were both members of Calvary United Methodist Church in Berwick, and Alvaretta at one time was a member of the Naomi Circle. Hige held membership in the Eagles Lodge in Berwick, and he was a life member of West Berwick Hose Company.

At the time of Hige’s death, they were married almost forty-eight years. In addition, Alvaretta was preceded in death by their son Vernon L.

According to the caretaker of the cemetery, Alveretta was the president of the Roselawn Cemetery Association, and it was her wish to be buried as close to her house as possible. Only a privacy hedge separates both her and her son’s headstones from the home she lived in throughout her married life.
