Irvin was the fourth of ten children born to Anna Dora Lindenmuth and William Jacob Fetterman, and he was born in Union Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He married Kathryn E., daughter of Matilda Carls and Harold Breisch. Kathryn was born in Ringtown, Union Township. One daughter and three sons were born of this marriage.
